Why Waiting Until January Could Cost You Hundreds in Dental Care

The holiday season is a magical time filled with family gatherings, parties with friends, and plenty of delicious food. With so much to do during this busy season, dental care for your family may fall to the bottom of the to-do list.

We realize how busy you are, but did you know that you could be losing valuable insurance benefits by waiting until January to schedule appointments?

Let’s explore how to make the most of your dental coverage.

Understanding Dental Insurance

Most dental insurance plans expire at the end of the year; this means that on January 1, your plan rolls over, and any unused benefits from 2025 are no longer accessible.

Some of the terms you should know include the following:

  • Premium — The amount you pay for dental insurance
  • Deductible — The amount you pay for dental treatments before your insurance begins to pay
  • Annual maximum — The amount your insurance coverage will pay during the calendar year

The Financial Impact of Delaying Treatment

When you forego treatment until January, you may lose any remaining benefits for 2025, so we recommend the following:

  • Schedule preventive visits — Most dental insurance covers 100% of preventive visits, and there’s no deductible to meet. This includes exams, cleanings, and x-rays. So, if it has been at least six months since your last visit, call us to schedule an appointment.
  • Arrange for restorative treatments — If you haven’t reached your annual maximum for the year, now is a great time to schedule any dental crowns or other restorative treatments. Even better, if your treatment involves more than one visit, you can schedule part of the treatment in 2025 and the other part in 2026.
  • Call us for insurance information — You may not know if you’ve met your deductible or annual maximum for the year, but we can help you navigate your dental insurance. And if you need to make appointments, we can help with that, too. Because we’re busy at the end of the year, the sooner you call us, the better!
